Nursing Patient Care Councils

Shared governance provides an organizational framework that empowers clinical nurses to participate in and lead decision-making processes. Through nursing patient councils, the shared governance model provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information that enhances the quality of nursing care and promotes clinical excellence through accountability and collaboration.

Purpose: Support clinical transformation, improve patient safety, and quality of care at Jackson Health System through the identification and adoption of standardized evidence-based practice and processes within the electronic health record (EHR).

Projects Completed:

  • OIRD Powerform (The Joint Commission Standard)
  • Pain Assessment/Reassessment Powerform (The Joint Commission Standard)
  • CHG Bathing (Nursing/IPC)
  • Blood Culture Collection (Improved Nursing Workflow)
  • Interdisciplinary Plan of Care (IPOC) (ongoing process to update IPOC)
  • Nursing Discharge (Next dose due and provider medication list notification)
  • POSS Implementation
  • Volume Based Feeding
  • VAD on the Banner Bar
  • Nozin on the MAR
  • Transdermal Patch Task (Reminder in EHR to remove medication patches)

Outcomes:

  • Increased participation from all facilitie
  • Increased compliance with pain assessment/reassessment
  • Increased communication via the use of Practice Alerts, Quick Tips, and e-Coach

Goals for 2022:

  • Increase participation from frontline staff
  • Visual lifecycle for each project/agenda item

Council Leaders

Purpose: To provide ways for Jackson Health System nurses and nursing support staff to remain engaged and enable Jackson Health System to meet its mission. Through a culture of engagement, nurses and nursing support staff will have their professional needs met and ensure Jackson is able to provide world-class care for everyone. This council includes sub-committees for recognition, events, communication, and satisfaction.

Projects Completed:

  • Human trafficking education systemwide
  • Human trafficking documentation in electronic health record implemented systemwide
  • Valuables and belongings policy revised, and new process implemented systemwide
  • Staff survey – feedback provided to leadership team
  • Staff requested more morale-boosting activities – multiple events happened.
  • In the process of creating a Standard of Practice for nursing documentation.
  • Approved several new processes and initiatives.

Outcomes:

  • Created a space for nurses to have their voices heard.

Goals for 2022

  • Improve collegial relationship with physicians
  • Provide more morale-boosting activities for staff

Council Leaders

Purpose: Advocate, provide resources, and guide changes needed to support nurses at the bedside. To expand the voice for nursing and patient advocacy at Jackson Health System. Identify issues and opportunities for change in order to improve patient care and experience. Advise other councils and leadership on issues related to nursing. Provide the best and most accessible information to the decision makers, researchers, policymakers, and leadership teams regarding the nursing mission, trends shaping the nursing profession, emerging jobs, and best practice programs.

Council Leaders

Purpose: Create a culture of inquiry with a goal of attaining and maintaining excellence in patient care. The council reviews nursing research and DNP student quality improvement project proposals, and makes recommendations for changes/additions before projects are forwarded to the Jackson Clinical Trials Office for IRB approval.

Projects Completed:

  • Oversight for nursing research and evidence-based practice projects:
    • Twodoctoral dissertations received approval
    • SixDNP student quality improvement Capstone projects received approval
  • Collaborated with Jackson Health SystemClinical Trials Office to standardize and develop a workflow for NREBPC review and IRB approval of nursing research studies and DNP student quality improvement projects

Outcomes:

  • Improved participation from direct care staff
  • Improved the process for review and approval of nursing research and DNP student quality improvement projects

Goals for 2022

  • Increase direct care staff membership on council
  • Recruit and train EBP mentors to help facilitate unit-based EBP projects
  • Collaborate with at least fiveunits to complete a unit-based EBP project
  • Complete at least two Jackson Health System nursing research projects

Council Leaders

Purpose: To develop, revise, and update standards of practice for each patient care department, unit, or floor by remaining informed of current evidence as it pertains to clinical practice and lead practice changes to align with new evidence. To advance the practice of nursing through interdisciplinary collaboration, advocacy, and facilitating all lines of communication with a goal of ensuring that our patients receive the highest quality care in a patient-family centered environment. This can only be achieved by providing support and evidence-based tools to our staff.

Purpose: Establish a centralized, multispecialty approach for clinical staff practice to improve performance on an individual and comprehensive level.

Council Leaders

Purpose: The Unit Practice Council (UPC) is how shared governance is expressed and organized at the unit level. UPCs comprise direct care staff from all caregiver roles. They meet regularly to assess, plan, implement and evaluate projects related to practice, quality of care provided and staff/patient education. In essence, the work of the UPC is about improving the practice environment and it is based on evidence.
