Clinical Learning & Development

Staff development is critical in Jackson’s ability to educate and train our nursing staff to assure that care delivery is optimal – every minute of every day. Here are some accomplishments by Clinical Learning & Development (CL&D).

To date, we have trained more than 250 preceptors in the program from across our different facilities, including the clinics and long-term care centers.

Learning and Innovation Center

Providing an environment that promotes learning has been the main driver for 2021. Several improvements were made to the Learning and Innovation Center located on the 7th floor of the Jackson Medical Towers on the Jackson Memorial Medical Center campus.

“Just in Time” Education

Responding to “Just in Time” Education is one of the main ways that CL&D provide immediate support. By sitting in on root cause analysis and monthly meetings with key stakeholders, CL&D provides timely support to frontline staff.

  • April 2021: Provided live Miracle training for all new hires after 13 months of virtual training
  • October 2021: Provided live clinical and nursing orientation after 19 months of virtual training
  • October 2021: Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital Mega Code and Standards of Professional Nursing Practice offered to all staff

Professional Development

The Jackson Nurse Preceptor program is a multifaceted program designed to equip the participants with the necessary tools to help them transition from staff members into their role as preceptors. A variety of adult teaching and learning strategies are used to assist the participants in acquiring the knowledge and skills to become effective preceptors. The new redesigned preceptor program includes many enhancements:

  • Formalized selection process for preceptors based on enhanced selection criteria.
  • Multifaceted, blended learning approach
  • Continuing education and development to support preceptors in their roles.
  • Mentorship
  • Meaningful rewards and recognition program

To date, we have trained more than 250 preceptors in the program from across our different facilities, including the clinics and long-term care centers.

Crisis Prevention Institute Training

CPI training resumed this year virtually and then live. Training occurred for more than 1,000 staff in2021.

American Heart Association

Clinical Learning and Development provides all American Heart Association certifications to Jackson staff. Certification validation only paused momentarily because of the pandemic; and when it was reinstated, a socially distanced space was provided for staff. Provided AHA certifications (BLS, ACLS and PALS) to 1,812 employees in 2021.

Clinical Training Systems Update

Providing customer-centered programs is our daily goal. Our Clinical Training Team works diligently to train new hires – both frontline personnel and leaders – and provide educational support for all MIRACLE system upgrades and enhancements. Our team worked with more than 4,000 Jackson team members in 2021.

Below are a few systemwide initiatives:

  • DrFirst systemwide roll out
  • Clairvia systemwide roll out
  • Care Compass systemwide roll out
  • EHR Education Council
  • Manage anddevelop MIRACLE Practice Alerts
  • Documentation enhancements

Innovative Programs

Transitioning New Grads to Practice

Transitioning of new nurses into practice during the COVID-19 pandemic required new ways of thinking and new strategies. During ordinary circumstances, the first year of employment for new graduate nurses can be challenging. In 2021, this transition was even more challenging as newly graduated nurses are entering the workforce with limited clinical experience during school. Jackson implemented several programs to help effectively transition our newest nurses into practice.

The New Grad Apprentice practices nursing under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), providing direct and indirect nursing care to all age-group patients. The NGA coordinates with the RN when managing nursing activities, assists and supports nursing personnel in delivering patient care and documents all pertinent information regarding nursing care. The on-the-job learning components of this Jacksonprogram, including the list of skills apprentices should acquire, are developed through collaboration between nursing leadership and clinical learning and development partners, providing hands-on opportunities to acquire new competencies. Once competencies have been signed off, the new grad apprentice will be working as a NGA under the supervision an RN. NGAs may be trained to carry out all tasks that RN’s can do.
